1. Purpose of this policy

Dr Nyari Maths & Science is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable learners.

This policy explains how Dr Nyari Maths & Science aims to keep learners safe during tuition, revision courses, online learning, communication, and use of educational resources.

This policy applies to:

• one-to-one tuition;
• small group tuition;
• live revision courses;
• holiday recap courses;
• on-demand Moodle or online courses;
• email and online communication;
• website enquiries;
• social media contact;
• downloadable resources and course materials.

2. Safeguarding commitment

Dr Nyari Maths & Science believes that every child and young person has the right to feel safe, respected and supported.

Safeguarding is taken seriously. Any concern about a child or young person’s safety or wellbeing will be responded to promptly and appropriately.

Dr Nyari Maths & Science will:

• prioritise the welfare of children and young people;
• provide a safe and respectful learning environment;
• listen to learners and take concerns seriously;
• maintain appropriate professional boundaries;
• communicate clearly with parents and carers;
• respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns;
• keep safeguarding records securely;
• share information with appropriate agencies where necessary to protect a child or young person.

3. Scope

This policy applies to all children and young people under the age of 18 who access tuition, courses, resources or communication from Dr Nyari Maths & Science.It also applies to vulnerable adults where safeguarding concerns may arise.

The safeguarding lead is responsible for:

• maintaining this safeguarding policy;
• responding to safeguarding concerns;
• recording concerns appropriately;
• contacting parents, carers or external agencies where appropriate;
• making referrals to children’s social care, the police or other safeguarding services where needed;
• reviewing safeguarding arrangements regularly.

5. Key safeguarding principles

Dr Nyari Maths & Science works according to the following principles:

• the welfare of the child is the main priority;
• safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility;
• children and young people should be treated with dignity and respect;
• concerns should never be ignored;
• information should be shared appropriately when needed to keep a child safe;
• learners should be supported in a calm, professional and non-judgemental way;
• parents and carers should normally be involved in communication and decision-making for learners under 18, unless doing so may place the child at further risk.

6. Types of safeguarding concern

Safeguarding concerns may include, but are not limited to:

• physical abuse;
• emotional abuse;
• sexual abuse;
• neglect;
• bullying or cyberbullying;
• online grooming or exploitation;
• self-harm or suicidal thoughts;
• domestic abuse affecting a child;
• child-on-child abuse;
• sexual harassment or inappropriate sexual behaviour;
• exploitation, coercion or control;
• radicalisation or extremism;
• unsafe home circumstances;
• concerning changes in behaviour, attendance or communication.

A safeguarding concern may arise from something a learner says, something observed during a lesson, written work, online behaviour, communication from a parent or carer, or information shared by another person.

7. Recognising possible concerns

Possible signs of safeguarding concerns may include:

• a learner saying they feel unsafe;
• unexplained injuries or frequent references to injury;
• sudden changes in mood, behaviour or confidence;
• extreme anxiety, fearfulness or withdrawal;
• inappropriate sexualised language or behaviour;
• repeated absence or sudden disengagement;
• comments suggesting self-harm or suicidal thoughts;
• signs of neglect, exhaustion or hunger;
• concerning online messages or interactions;
• a learner appearing frightened of a parent, carer or another person;
• disclosures of abuse, harm or risk.

These signs do not automatically mean that abuse is taking place, but they should be taken seriously and considered carefully.

8. Responding to a disclosure

If a child or young person discloses abuse, harm or a safeguarding concern, Dr Nyari Maths & Science will:

• listen calmly and carefully;
• take the concern seriously;
• avoid asking leading questions;
• avoid promising confidentiality;
• explain that information may need to be shared to help keep them safe;
• reassure the learner that they have done the right thing by speaking;
• record the concern as soon as possible using the learner’s own words where possible;
• take appropriate action, which may include contacting parents or carers, children’s social care, the police, NSPCC or another safeguarding agency.

The learner will not be asked to investigate, prove or repeat the concern unnecessarily.

9. Recording safeguarding concerns

Safeguarding concerns will be recorded clearly and factually.

A safeguarding record should include:

• the date and time of the concern;
• the learner’s name;
• what was seen, heard or disclosed;
• the learner’s own words where possible;
• any relevant context;
• actions taken;
• who was contacted;
• the date and time of any referral or follow-up action.

Records will be stored securely and shared only where necessary to protect the child or young person, comply with legal duties, or seek safeguarding advice.

10. Reporting safeguarding concerns

If there is an immediate risk of serious harm or danger, emergency services should be contacted by calling 999.

If there is a concern that a child may be at risk of abuse, neglect or harm, Dr Nyari Maths & Science may contact:

• the child’s local authority children’s social care team;
• the local Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub, where applicable;
• the police;
• the NSPCC Helpline;
• CEOP, where there are concerns about online sexual abuse or grooming.

Parents or carers will usually be informed of concerns unless doing so may increase the risk to the child or interfere with a safeguarding investigation.

11. If a concern relates to Dr Nyari Maths & Science

If a safeguarding concern or allegation is made about Dr Nyari Maths & Science, the concern should be taken seriously. 

Where appropriate, the concern should be referred to the relevant local authority safeguarding team, Local Authority Designated Officer, police, NSPCC or another appropriate safeguarding agency. Dr Nyari Maths & Science will cooperate fully with safeguarding agencies and will not attempt to investigate serious allegations independently.

12. Professional boundaries

Dr Nyari Maths & Science will maintain clear professional boundaries with learners.

This means:

• communication with learners under 18 should normally involve parents or carers;
• tuition arrangements, payments and scheduling should be agreed with parents or carers where the learner is under 18;
• personal relationships with learners are not appropriate;
• personal social media contact with learners under 18 is not permitted;
• private messaging with learners under 18 should be avoided unless agreed with a parent or carer and used only for educational purposes;
• communication should remain appropriate, professional and related to learning;
• gifts should not be exchanged except for low-value educational materials or agreed group rewards where appropriate.

13. Online tuition and live courses

For online tuition and live courses, Dr Nyari Maths & Science will aim to create a safe online learning environment.

Where possible:

• lessons should take place using a recognised online platform;
• parents or carers should know when lessons are taking place;
• learners should attend from an appropriate location;
• learners should be appropriately dressed;
• the tutor should teach from an appropriate professional environment;
• group sessions should be managed respectfully;
• inappropriate language, behaviour or content will not be accepted;
• private chat functions should be limited or monitored where appropriate;
• screen sharing should be used only for learning purposes;
• lessons should not be recorded unless this has been agreed in advance.

If a live session is recorded for revision or on-demand access, learners and parents/carers should be informed in advance. Recordings should avoid showing student faces, names or personal information wherever possible.

14. Moodle and on-demand learning

Where courses are hosted through Moodle or another online learning platform:

• learners should use their own login details;
• login details must not be shared;
• course spaces should be used only for learning;
• comments, messages or forum posts must be respectful and appropriate;
• any safeguarding concerns arising through Moodle or online course activity will be taken seriously;
• learners should not share personal information in public course areas;
• inappropriate content may be removed.

15. Social media and public platforms

Dr Nyari Maths & Science may use social media platforms, YouTube or other public platforms for educational content and marketing.

To support online safety:

• learners under 18 should not use social media direct messages for private personal communication with Dr Nyari Maths & Science;
• public comments should be monitored where possible;
• inappropriate comments may be deleted or reported;
• personal information about learners will not be shared without appropriate consent;
• images, testimonials, messages or results from learners will not be used publicly without permission from the learner and, where under 18, their parent or carer.

16. Images, testimonials and student work

Student names, photographs, videos, messages, testimonials, exam results or examples of work will not be published without appropriate consent.

For learners under 18, consent should be obtained from a parent or carer.

Where possible, student work used for examples or promotion should be anonymised.

17. Safer practice

Dr Nyari Maths & Science will take reasonable steps to support safer practice, including:

• keeping safeguarding knowledge up to date;
• maintaining appropriate professional boundaries;
• using clear terms and conditions;
• keeping appropriate records;
• using secure systems for communication and course delivery;
• reviewing safeguarding arrangements regularly;
• seeking advice from safeguarding agencies where needed.

18. Confidentiality and information sharing

Learners should feel able to speak openly, but confidentiality cannot be promised where there is a safeguarding concern.

Information may need to be shared with parents, carers, children’s social care, police, NSPCC, CEOP or other appropriate agencies if this is necessary to protect a child or young person.

Information will be shared on a need-to-know basis and handled sensitively.

19. Equality and inclusion

Dr Nyari Maths & Science is committed to treating all learners fairly and respectfully.

Safeguarding concerns will be taken seriously regardless of a learner’s age, disability, sex, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation, gender identity, background, family circumstances, educational need or academic ability.

All learners should be able to access support in a safe and respectful environment.

20. Behaviour expectations

Learners are expected to behave respectfully during tuition, courses and online communication.

Unacceptable behaviour may include:

• bullying or harassment;
• discriminatory language;
• sexualised comments or behaviour;
• sharing inappropriate content;
• deliberately disrupting lessons;
• recording or sharing lessons without permission;
• misuse of Moodle, chat tools or online platforms.

Where behaviour creates a safeguarding concern or risk to others, parents or carers may be contacted and further action may be taken.

21. Useful safeguarding contacts
